Abstrakt: S rostoucí důležitostí angličtiny rostou i obavy z rozdílů ve znalostech žáků s odlišným socioekonomickým zázemím. Jedním z relevantních faktorů mohou být i dobré podmínky pro učení se cizích jazyků a interakce s rodilými mluvčími angličtiny. Tato studie zkoumá vztah mezi houževnatostí při učení se anglickému jazyku u žáků a počtem jejich kamarádů, jejichž rodným jazykem není čeština, případně je angličtina. Na vzorku přibližně 3000 českých žáků vyššího sekundárního stupně byl nalezen slabý pozitivní vztah mezi soustavností úsilí (jedna ze složek houževnatosti) a počtem kamarádů, jejichž rodný jazyk je jiný než čeština, případně je přímo angličtina. Tato zjištění poukazují na důležitost dalšího zkoumání role socioekonomických faktorů při učení se cizím jazykům.

Title: THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN GRIT IN LEARNING ENGLISH AND INTERACTION WITH PEERS WITH FIRST LANGUAGE OTHER THAN CZECH
Abstract: With the increasing importance of English there are growing concerns re- garding the knowledge gaps between students with different socioeconomic backgrounds. Relevant factors may include good conditions for learning for- eign languages and interaction with native English speakers. We study the link between grit in learning English and the number of friends a student has whose first language is not Czech or is specifically English. On the sample of ca. 3,000 Czech upper secondary students, we found a weak positive relationship between perseverance of effort (a subcomponent of grit) and the number of friends a student has whose first language is not Czech and whose first language is English. These findings emphasize the need for further research on the role of socioeconomic factors in foreign language learning.
