Title: INFLUENCE OF INTERACTIVITY OF TRAINING SIMULATIONS IN THE FIELD OF COMPETENT CZECH HISTORY: TWO EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES
Abstract: Although there is agreement that computer simulations are effective in education, there is little empirically based information on which elements increase efficiency (Tobias & Fletcher, 2011; Mayer & Fiorella, 2015). The aim of this study is to determine the role played by the interactivity of teaching material in the teaching process in contemporary history among high school students. We tested whether the possibility of students actively interfering with the operation of the simulation had a measurable significant influence on their acquired knowledge compared to those students who passively follow the process of the simulation, right after the experiment and a month after it. The theoretical basis of the study is based on the cognitive psychological position and, consequently, on the cognitive theory of the multimedia learning of Richard Mayer (Mayer, 2013) and on the knowledge in the field of „Humancomputer interaction“ (Stuart, 1994) which examines the design and use of computer technology in relation to its users. The principal theoretical concept of the study is: the cognitive burden that can be seen as: „the total amount of mental effort spent in the work memory.“ Its author John Sweller (Sweller, 1988) simply says that it is necessary to design teaching material in such a way that the student’s ability to learn is used, but there is no overcrowding. The main method of study is a laboratory experiment conducted in a computer lab. The experiment is built on comparing the results of the experimental and control group in a given specific task. This research method includes the use of knowledge tests and a widely used „Flow short scale ‚questionnaire (Engeser & Rheinberg, 2008). The study sample consisted of 152 secondary school students (male 68; female 84) aged 16 to 19 years (mean student age = 17.237; SD = 0.770). As a research tool, we used a modified version of the Czechoslovak school game 3889. The teaching material, which contains interactive elements, has the ability to attract students and“ pull „into teaching. Students are more“ immersed „in teaching activity. None of the experiments, however, showed better knowledge in the form of retention, which we defined as reproduction information, or transfer, which we define as using information in a new context. Our results consistently with other authors who deal with this topic show that the interactive elements of teaching materials attract students, but do not guarantee a positive influence on their knowledge.
