EERA ACADEMIC WRITING WORKSHOP
8–9 October 2026,
Faculty of Arts, Palacký University, Olomouc
This workshop is designed for PhD students, early-career researchers, and academics seeking to publish articles in peer-reviewed journals and enhance their publication profile. Participants will explore a wide range of topics aimed at developing academic writing, editing, and revising skills in English, while also gaining insight into the journal publication process. The workshop is organized by the European Educational Research Association (EERA) in cooperation with the Czech Educational Research Association (CAPV) and Slovak Educational Research Society (SERS). The workshop will be led by experts: Dr Céline Healy from University of Maynooth and Prof. Stephen McKinney from University of Glasgow.

Prof. Stephen J. McKinney is the leader of the research and teaching group, Creativity, Culture and Faith, in the School of Education, University of Glasgow. His research interests include faith education, the impact of poverty on education, sectarianism and education, and the education of minorities. He is the past President of the Scottish Educational Research Association and is currently a member of the Council of the European Educational Research Association. He is a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Beliefs and Values and Improving Schools and is a past co-editor of the Scottish Educational Review. He has authored or co-authored over 170 articles, book chapters, research reports and briefings.
Dr. Céline Healy is a lecturer, researcher, and teacher educator at the Maynooth University Department of Education. She is a leading figure in curriculum design and educational reform, having chaired National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NCCA) Development Groups for multiple senior and junior cycle modern language specifications. Dr. Healy actively shapes national policy as an advising member on the Foreign Languages Advisory Group (FLAG) for Ireland’s Languages Connect strategy and serves on the Steering Committee for the Irish National Pilot Project in Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL). She also has held prominent leadership positions in research communities, including serving as President of the Educational Studies Association of Ireland (ESAI) from 2022 to 2024 and as a Council Member of the European Educational Research Association. Her diverse research portfolio spans projects from CLIL in initial teacher education to STEAM-based vaccine communication, reflecting her core expertise in teacher education, applied linguistics, creative arts pedagogies, and inclusive education.
Workshop outline
The Essential Guide to Publishing Peer Reviewed Articles
This interactive workshop is aimed at postgraduate students, early-career researchers and other researchers and academics who are seeking to publish articles in peer-reviewed journals and enhance their publication profile. The workshop will address all parts of the process of publishing a peer-reviewed article beginning with the conception of the ideas through the planning, writing, editing, submitting, reviewing, revisions and final publication. The workshop is designed to be interactive and will be in five parts.
Part one will discuss the creation of a personal strategic plan for the dissemination of research. This will result in a Publication Strategy.
Part two will focus in depth on the conceptualisation, writing and submission of an article to a peer-reviewed journal. This will include targeting journals.
Part three will invite participants to reflect on and discuss their own progress in writing articles for peer reviewed journals.
Part four will provide a very detailed explanation and discussion of the various stages of the review process for peer reviewed articles before possible publication. This will include a close examination and exploration of the top ten reasons why articles are rejected.
Part five will provide an overview of how to respond to reviews, the use of social media to publicise the article, and an opportunity for summative questions and discussion.

11:40-13:10 Session 2 Conceptualisation, writing and submission of an article to a peer-reviewed journal. This will include targeting journals.
13:10-14:10 Lunch
14:10-15:40 Session 3 Writing the Article Participants will write a short piece and consider ways of organising and planning writing as part of their working pattern. This will be used throughout the rest of the workshop. The mechanics of academic writing will be discussed including use of academic language.
