Title: INTERGENERATIONAL LEARNING IN THE COMMUNITY

Abstract: We focus on intergenerational learning in the community. The main research question is‘ what and how members of different generations learn from each other and what opportunities they have for mutual learning in communities and community education ‚. The main research issue is framed by topics of intergenerational cooperation, sharing, relations and mutual support. Theoretical points of reference are two concepts for us: the concept of lifelong learning and the concept of intergenerational learning, which we see as‘ a process that aims to bring people together with each other with ambitious, mutually beneficial activities that promote greater understanding and respect between generations and can contribute to the building of community cohesion ‚(Fischer, 2008, p. 8). It is the environment of communities and community education that we specifically focus our research attention on intergenerational programmes. The proposed contribution is based on the first qualitative phase of the four-year project. It is built on the research technique called observice, i.e. observation of behavior and subsequent examination of the interpretations of the actor’s behaviour by means of deep group interviews. A situation is chosen for the unit of analysis, which guarantees a comprehensive approach to the observed phenomenon. Data analysis is conducted by searching for regularity in learning situations, and by the need for learning situations in relevant social and cultural contexts. The purpose of this qualitative phase is the comprehensive description and explanation of intergenerational learning situations in the environment of community programmes. This phase is to be a back point for the quantitative phase of research into intergenerational learning. From this qualitative phase based on research technology observice. We expect it to help us: expand or challenge the existing theory; become a complementary source of hypotheses for subsequent quantitative research.
