Title: THEORY AND PRACTICE OF POLISH RESEARCH ON THE TEACHING PROFESSION
Abstract: The aim of my presentation is to discuss new theoretical approaches to teachers‘ professionalism. Critical pedagogy scholars perceived teachers as „transformative intellectualists“ (H.A. Giroux, P. McLaren). Transformativeness is understood as teachers‘ actions aimed at making changes in education, society and culture through emancipation from constraints and realizing the politics of resistance. In the Polish post-1989 context, teachers have become elements of the educational market, and roles that they have played rarely concemed resistance or emancipation. In my presentation I draw on Polish research on the teaching profession after the systemic changes, demonstrating different approaches to the profession. My research methodology is grounded in the qualitative strategy, and the interpretative-critical paradigm. Research approaches I used the critical discourse analysis and action research. The results of my research include the presentation of a theoretical perspective on the teaching profession and practical problems that follow from it; the dominance of the instrumental knowledge over the emancipatory and critical knowledge in Polish research on the teaching profession and a proposal for a change in the field ofteachers‘ training.
