Title: APPLICATION OF FORMS OF POWER TO TEACHERS DURING TEACHING PRACTICE
Abstract: The teacher’s superior knowledge of the content remains without a class with clearly set power relationships without any benefit. The need for a power arrangement in the teaching process arises mainly for initial teachers and students to practice. That is why our aim is to describe how much power is negotiated, maintained and perceived in the classes of teachers. In this contribution we will focus on a legitimate and coercive basis of power according to the concept of power, based on the theory of French and Raven (1959). We define power in school class through three main characteristics: circularity, situativity and reciprocity. Circularity of power means that power in school classes constantly moves between teachers and pupils and pupils. The organisation of power relations is also constantly changing across situations (Jacobs, 2012), so power is defined in a situation. In terms of reciprocity, there is a mutual influence on attitudes, values and negotiations (McCroskey, Richmond, & McCroskey, 2006; Moscovic, 2007). In research, which is part of the project GAČR (GA13-24456S), we are based on the concept of mixed design. The quantitative part involves the adaptation of the questionnaire for the examination of power in school classes (Schrodt, Witt, Turman, 2007). These questionnaires were also distributed to students in whom students had a teaching experience. The qualitative part includes an analysis of the video recordings of student lessons for practice. A total of 48 teaching hours (8 students x 6 hours) were analysed. Based on the piloting of the questionnaire, it was found that legitimate and coercive powers constitute one factor. This factor has been targeted by qualitative analysis through the videorecords of student education on practice. The contribution therefore describes how legitimate and coercive power is used by students to practice, how pupils respond to the application of this power and how the concept of these bases of power is transformed across school-class situations.
