Abstract: The study focuses on issues of transforming forms of self-education in connection with the development of modern technologies. The subject of research is the monitoring of development trends in the use of digital technologies for self-education activities of pupils and students. The aim of the research is to verify Internet attitudes as a specific mass communication medium and ways of using the virtual environment of the Internet for the teaching activities of pupils and students in their self-education outside school. Digital technologies are an important factor in shaping modern society. The virtual environment of the Internet is a self-evident part of the world in which the current generation of schoolchildren and students live. Thus, as a key teacher of education, the school has to deal with the task of developing technological competences for pupils, while facing the question of applying new technologies in teaching. On the one hand, they are placed in the context of education of great hope, but on the other hand, many negative aspects of the long-term and educational contact between the young generation and digital media are also beginning to emerge. The questionnaire inquiry was carried out in 20152017, the respondents were primary school pupils and teachers at FP TUL (Teaching in the Internet, 160 students at the University, 180 students at the University and lower years of the multi-annual gymnasium). The results are combined with selected research outputs „Media in self-education of pupils, “ carried out in 20012010 (2002295 students, 2004261 students, 2007467 students, 2008187 students). The unstandardised questionnaire and the statistical methods of Cohen’s kappa coefficient, the student t-test, were used. The environment of the Internet is the second dimension of the life of the young generation, providing new learning opportunities. Access to the Internet at home, or on your own mobile phone, currently has almost 100% of the students at the school. The main communication environment has become Facebook for a large part of the young population (in the 2015 survey, it lists it as a common environment for communication in teaching activities outside the school, 54% of students and 98% of students). Digital technologies extend the scope for active teaching work. On the other hand, we are faced with serious questions about the impact of the virtual environment on the lifestyle and the values of the young generation.
