Title: ACADEMIC OPTIMISMUS AND NON-COGNITABLE EDUCATION EXPENSES AT SECOND TEAM
Abstract: The aim of the study is to explore the relationship between the concept of individual academic optimism of teachers and the four non-cognitive outcomes of education: perceived own effectiveness in mathematics (10 items), general perceived efficiency (7 items), endurance (4 items) and motivation (3 items). Academic optimism is a latent design consisting of three concepts that are interconnected: the emphasis of the school on creating a learning environment, perceived by the self-effectiveness of teachers and the trust of teachers to pupils and their parents (Bonon et al., 2014; Hoy, Tarter, & Woolfolk Hoy, 2006). Research has shown that academic optimism serves as a predictor of pupils‘ results regardless of the socio-economic composition of the school (Bonen et al. 2014; Straková, Simon, Soukup & Greger 2016). There has been an intensive debate recently about the importance of the cognitive characteristics of pupils and their role in predicting cognitive outcomes. It turns out that the non-cognitive characteristics of pupils are not only important predictors of education results, but also important outputs of school education, because they predict later success (Duckworth & Gross, 2014). Therefore, it is useful to focus on their relationship with factors that are key to pupils‘ results and their success in the next life. The data was collected in May 2016 in the framework of the Czech Longitude Study in Education (CLOSE) investigation. The dataset included data from 4798 classrooms and 1469 teachers from 124 primary schools and 39 colleges. For analysis of the relationship between academic optimism, the social-economic composition of the class, the type of school (primary school vs. gymnasium) and the four non-cognitive results we used two level structural modelling (school level and individual level). The calculations were made in MPlus. The analysis showed a strong relationship between academic optimism, the socio-economic composition of the class and the type of school, as well as a strong influence of the socio-economic composition of the class on the non-cognitive output of pupils. However, no direct effect of academic optimism on cognitive outputs was shown. In addition, non-cognitive outputs were related only to the socio-economic composition of the class, endurance and mathematical perceived self-efficiency related to the type of school. These results are important due to the early distribution of pupils into different educational currents in the Czech education system.
