Title: Cronbach’s alpha or McDonald’s omega?

Abstract: The discussions on Cronbach’s alpha (Cronbach, 1951) and its problems are longlasting, one of the seminal summaries was written by Cortina (1993). In addition, in recent years, McDonald’s Omega (McDonald, 1999) has been advocating the internal consistency of scales instead of Cronbach’s alpha in psychometrics and educometrics. Some authors consider it a better indicator than Cronbach’s alpha (eg Hermosilla & Alvarado, 2016), some magazines (eg EJDP) already consider McDonald’s omega a standard publication. The question is whether we should succumb to McDonadl’s omega obsession or conservatively remain in the use of Cronbach’s alpha. The paper introduces the logic of both coefficients, describes the models behind them and draws attention to situations when they should be used. They also compare their values by two practical examples and point out that there are many others in addition to these two coefficients (especially Revelle’s Beta, glb, or Gutmann’s lambda 6).
