Title: The Promises and Challenges of Multi-sited Ethnographic Approach in Research of Diversity in Pre-service Teacher Education
Abstract: In this paper, we focus on methodological aspects of research on teacher education with respect to diversity in Czech classrooms. It is part of broader research project funded by Czech Science Foundation (GA 19-06763S): “Ethnography of Diversity in Pre-Service Teacher Education”, which focuses on the ways: 1) in which students in a Master’s teacher education program become acquainted with the principles of working with diversity 2) in which diversity is constructed at the lower-secondary schools where the students do their teaching practice. In this methodological paper, we discuss promises as well as challenges in conducting multi-sited ethnographic research among several, interrelated settings (university, lower-secondary school) where diversity can be constructed in diverse, even contradictory ways. With reference to the up-to-date research on the topic, we analyze different conceptions of diversity in education and how these are embedded in the ethnographic paradigm.
