Title: SCHOOLING IN CAPITALIST POLAND: CHANGES IN THE POLISH EDUCATION AFTER 1989

Abstract: Systemic transformation that started in Poland in 1989 has an impact on the education system. The past 25 years have witnessed a neoliberal tum that in a significant way influenced the school functioning and teachers‘ employment security, as well as brought about standardisation, commercialisation and commodification of education. As a part of a comparative study of Polish and Czech borderline schools, we examined local educational policies and carried out qualitative and quantitative research in selected schools in the Lower Silesia region. The results of the research project are illustrative of different stages of neoliberal transformation in schools, from the implementatfon of a market oriented local educational policy, to attempts to limit public funding of schools, to public school closures. In the theoretical part of our presentation we draw on research and theories developed by Polish (eg. Szkudlarek, Potulicka, Rutkowiak, Struíczyk) and foreign (eg. Freire, McLaren, Giroux) representatives of critical pedagogy. We reconstruct the relationship between ideology and education in the context of Polish transformation, and pose questions conceming the role of school, teacher, student and knowledge. In the empirical part we use a framework based on qualitative and quantitative research approaches, developed in collaboration with our Czech partners, which we utilised to examine changes in the Polish school system seen from the perspective of school managers and teachers, as well as to scrutinize relevant educational documents that functioned as an instrument of change. The results of the Polish part of the study show the position of schools, teachers and principals in the neoliberal context. One of the key categories is school bureaucratic security in the market environment, which we use to demonstrate ways of neutralizing changes from the perspective of school managers. Our analysis concentrates on the actual effects of changes which transfonned schools into companies, principals into managers and teachers into labour force.
