Title: MEN IN SPECIAL EDUCATION: A PARTICIPATORY SEMINAR SUPPORTING PROFESSIONAL IDENTITY

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to present and evaluate a participatory experiential seminar designed to support the professional identity of students in special education, with a particular focus on men as a minority group within the field. The seminar was implemented as part of a broader project aimed at analysing the low representation of men in special education programmes and understanding their career choice processes. The evaluation of the seminar was conducted using a mixed-methods research design. The quantitative component consisted of a questionnaire survey (N = 115; 85.2% female, 14.8% male), complemented by qualitative analysis of focus groups (N = 11) and open-ended questionnaire responses. The questionnaire was pilot-tested and demonstrated internal consistency (Cronbach’s α = 0.81). The findings indicate that professionalism in teaching, teacher responsiveness, and the attractiveness of instruction are interrelated and associated with greater certainty in students’ choice of field and their motivation to complete their studies. Gender differences suggest that female students tend to evaluate certain aspects of teaching more positively, whereas male students reflect their minority status as heightened visibility, associated both with pressure and with opportunities for professional growth. The participatory and practice-oriented nature of the seminar appears to be a significant factor in supporting professional identity development. However, its impact on the long-term retention of men in the field should be understood within the broader context of social and institutional factors.
