Title: DIAGNOSTIC PORTFOLIO AS A TOOL OF FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT IN PRE-SERVICE KINDERGARTEN TEACHER EDUCATION
Abstract: The paper examines the diagnostic competence of pre-service kindergarten teachers by analysing diagnostic portfolio designs. The research builds on prior findings on the smooth transition between kindergarten and elementary school, highlighting the diagnostic portfolio as a key tool for effective formative assessment. The study aims to identify students’ concepts of the child, evaluate the quality of proposed diagnostic activities, and describe how students approach progress monitoring and child self-assessment within a formative framework. An analysis of 30 portfolios shows that students demonstrate a basic understanding of diagnostics but lack deeper insight into the interconnections among diagnostic areas and the long-term nature of assessment. Strengths include the use of assessment criteria and evidence of learning, while a critical weakness is the insufficient linkage between the child’s self-concept, self-assessment, and ongoing progress monitoring.
