Title: The “New Curriculum Movement” Behind the Iron Curtain

Abstract: The paper analyses the curricular reforms of 1960s and 1970s in Eastern European countries with special focus on the Soviet Union and Czechoslovakia. The study is based on the archival research of primary sources on the Czechoslovak reforms and some analysis of secondary literature on other Eastern European countries. The comparative analysis of reforms in Western Countries, the USSR and one of Soviet satellites draws a complex picture of influences on curriculum making on national level in a strongly centralised system. The similarities of the contemporary social realist discourse and the Soviet or Czech reforms of 1960s and 1970s (e.g. the emphasis on the abstract, intellectually demanding subject matter) are explained by common influence of the ideas of L. S. Vygotsky and activity theory. Besides, we show how the heritage of the 1960s and 1970s shapes the present day curriculum making in the Czech Republic.
