Title: Sense of Academic Futility – the Potential Contribution of Mechanisms at School level
Abstract: The aim of the paper is to describe the preliminary results of a study focused on exploring mechanisms that can contribute to creating a sense of academic futility. The concept of academic futility was proposed by Brookover and Schneider (1975) to identify some factors that might explain the differences in achievement levels among schools. A high sense of futility indicates a feeling of having no control over success or failure in the school system. Data gathered in semistructured interviews was analyzed using a case-oriented narrative approach. The school can play an important role in creating a sense of academic futility by creating situations in which students feel that their opportunity to succeed is small. The possible roots of such situations can be found both in the current structural setting of teaching and learning, and in the didactic approaches and attitudes of teachers and their care for classroom and school climate.
Keywords: Academic futility, school ciimate, qualitative approach
