Title: Czech Secondary Pre-service Teachers ’Perspectives of Geography: Findings of Cluster Analysis
Abstract: The text is focused on the perspectives of geography in secondary pre-service geography teachers. The theoretical framework was based on a classification of geography perspectives developed by Catling (2004). The survey was conducted with 183 geography pre-service teachers (population in 2019) at 9 universities – geography departments in Czechia. In order to pre-service teachers could choose one of seven possible responses, we constructed a questionnaire. Each one response (statement) illustrated one of the Catlings’ perspectives. The responses were hierarchically ordered by pre-service teachers (1 – the most preferred) for two areas: 1) geography and 2) geography teaching. Based on estimation of cluster analysis we found for both areas two strong clusters of pre-service teachers, made up of the perspectives Globalists, Map-lover, Earthists and Placeists. In the conference presentation, we would like to show the findings of the cluster analysis and point out potential interpretation.
