PŘECHOD ŽÁKŮ ZE ČTVRTÉHO DO PÁTÉHO ROČNÍKU ZÁKLADNÍ ŠKOLY (PŘÍPADOVÁ STUDIE)

Sekce 2: VYCHOVÁVANÝ A VZDĚLÁVANÝ JEDINEC

Title: _

Abstract: The aim of this case study was to describe how pupils themselves and their class teachers perceive the transition from 4th to 5th year. The techniques of data collection were analysis of essays, in-depth interviews with teachers, participating observations and focal interviews with pupils. Following theoretical bases, this case study interprets the perception of transit in three time lines. The first part describes the situation prior to the transition, in the second part the focus is on the situation just after the transition, the third part provides the results of the transit after half a year. The transition of pupils from one educational environment to another is generally seen as a critical moment in their educational path. This is a process that is accompanied by a number of problems, whether educational, social or organisational (Akos and Galassi, 2004, Toping, 2011). The implications of all these processes, which can intersect, interfere with the school life of pupils and may, to some extent, affect their relationship with school and learning (Walter, et al., 2011). Change in the configuration of relationships between teachers and pupils, change in the nature of teaching, new ways of working at school and teaching, change in physical environment or new experience with different social relations with classmates (cf. Pietarinen, 1998, Smyth and McCoy and Darmody, 2004) – these are common characteristics of the difficulties encountered by pupils during the transition and are faced with difficult situations to deal with. The study presents the results of the research probe aimed at finding an answer to the question of how pupils and teachers perceive the transition from 4th to 5th grade primary school. In an effort to understand and describe the way of life of the school environment actors, the study reports on the design of an ethnographic case study (Herriot, 1997 in Kucera, 1992, p. 6). The main features include combining different data collection methods (cf. Hendl, 2005, p. 108). The data on which it is based were collected through direct observation, analysis of essays, focal interviews with pupils and interviews with teachers. The school burden and the transformation of social relations, together with organisational matters, is one of the challenges encountered by pupils in the transition between education environments (cf. Akos and Galassi, 2004; Walter et al., 2011). The pupils feared higher school requirements and the associated decrease in benefits. They perceived new ways of organising teaching by individual teachers, more frequent assignment of homework and generally pressure on their independence and responsibility in the performance of school duties.
