Sekce 2: VYCHOVÁVANÝ A VZDĚLÁVANÝ JEDINEC

Title: ROLE OF SOCIAL RELATIONS OF HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
Abstract: The contribution is led by the question: what is the character of the social relations of university students, which successfully manage university studies, primarily at the beginning of their studies. The aim of the contribution is therefore to imagine students rebuilding their current social relations at the beginning of their studies at the university, creating new social links and using different types of social relations for what. The basic theoretical starting point is Granoveter’s theory of social ties (Granoveter, 1973, 1983). Granoveter distinguished so-called strong and weak interpersonal links, each type of social link having different potential for the transmission of information that the individual uses to his benefit. In the course of career changes, where we can include starting a university, social relations are naturally changed, and it is typical for students who enter a university to build their social ties and networks relatively new. The new form of their social relations thus becomes an instrument of adaptation in a new (higher) environment, but because social links and relationships are also adaptable, they can also become a tool of exploiting the potential of social relations for various purposes (e.g. the need for assistance or support, ensuring access to resources, gaining power). The research survey from which the data originated was aimed at using the services of the consultancy centres of three universities in Brno. The research that mapped the course of the advisory process from describing the situations that led to the search for services to the reflection of outputs and impacts of services took place according to the design of the established theory. For data collection, a semi-structured interview was created and data collection between students who used the services offered took place during 2015. I work with data from 34 students, including students of Masaryk University, Technical University in Brno and Mendel University. During the first semester of their studies, students are rebuilding their current social relationships and creating a network of so-called weak links. On the basis of data, various types of social links are described and, at the same time, what students use different types of social ties and how they help them to continue their successful studies. The fundamental difference in these aspects is particularly apparent between so-called strong and weak ties.
