V příspěvku vycházíme z rešerše a podrobné analýzy zahraničních studií. Akademický inbreeding chápeme obecně jako stav, kdy univerzity zaměstnávají své vlastní absolventy, což bývá často kritizováno v souvislosti s nízkou akademickou mobilitou, nevelkou dynamikou akademického pracovního trhu a incestním způsobem personálního rozvoje (Bílá kniha, 2009, s. 19; Šima & Pabian, 2013, s. 121). Fouché a Louw (2001, s. 152) hovoří v souvislosti s inbreedingem o „epidemii“ a „rakovině“ vysokého školství.

Title: ACADEMIC INBREEDING: EXISTENCE OBJECTIVES OR RAM OF HIGH EDUCATION?

Abstract: In our review paper presented at the ČAPV conference in 2016, we focus on the so-called inbreeding, i.e. university practice of employing our own graduates. The aim of the contribution is to draw attention to the benefits and pitfalls of inbreeding and thus to raise the academic public’s awareness of this issue. The contribution is based on research and detailed analysis of foreign studies. Academic inbreeding is generally understood as a state in which universities employ their own graduates, which is often criticised in the context of low academic mobility, low dynamics of the academic labour market and an incestuous manner of personnel development (White Paper, 2009, p. 19); Sima & Pablo, 2013, p. 121). Fouché and Louw (2001, p. 152) talk about the „epidemic ‚and“ cancer‘ of higher education in connection with inbreedings. Other researchers point out, however, that in academic systems, which mainly include universities with local scientific impact, undeveloped academic labour market, unified pay ratios and a dysfunctional system for evaluating the quality of scientific output, inbreeding is considered a natural and rational phenomenon to ensure continuity and productivity in difficult conditions (Klemenčich & Zgaga, 2015). In view of the relative inefficiency of inbreeding in the Czech Republic, we came from 11 current studies (years 2008-2015), which we found by keywords in the Web of Science and Scopus databases, and from the latest monograph (Yudkevich, Altbach, & Rumbley, 2015). Based on the literature of the studies mentioned, we have expanded the set of analysed texts with other relevant sources. For the studies in our file, after a thorough reading, we followed in particular their thematic and target focus, declared theoretical bases and applied conceptualization and operationalisation of inbreeding. The main finding is that most studies address the effects of inbreeding on the academic performance of individuals (typically according to Scientometric indicators). Furthermore, there are qualitative studies analysing the reproduction of inbreeding. In addition, there are no theoretical bases for many studies. Finally, it should be noted that the aim of broader generalisation of the studies analysed comes across different academic traditions and cultural and historical backgrounds. It is therefore very difficult to formulate generally valid statements on the causes and effects of inbreeding on individuals, institutions or the entire national system of higher education.
