Title: TRAJECTORIES OF ACADEMIC BELONGING: SOURCES AND DYNAMICS IN TWO UNIVERSITY CONTEXTS

Abstract: This paper presents a study focused on student belonging, i.e., the feeling of social and academic fit, which is an important factor in academic success. In the study, we created and implemented the “Belonging Trajectory Workshop,” a 90-minute teaching module integrated into psychology courses at the University of St. Andrews and the Faculty of Education at Charles University (N = 224). The workshop combines a social-psychological conceptualization of belonging with a graphic record of students’ own experiences from admission to university to the present and subsequent reflection. The analysis of the trajectories created by students focused on eight categories of events that strengthen or weaken belonging and on the dynamics of its development over time. The results showed the fundamental importance of peer relationships and exam success as key sources of increased belonging. Seven types of developmental trajectories were identified, and it was found that even negative emotions can contribute to strengthening belonging in the long term.
