Abstract: The contribution is a methodological and factual look-through for the project on intergenerational learning („Intergenerational learning in various social environments, “ the GACR project no. GA13-07234S), which was focused on teaching in the school environment among members of the faculty, on learning in the workplace between employees in large and family firms and on learning in communities and intergenerational community programmes. The aim of the contribution is to recap the methodological process at its various stages and to reflect them critically. The well-known definition of intergenerational learning says that it is a „process through which individuals of all ages acquire skills and knowledge, but also attitudes and values, from everyday experience, from all available sources and in all ways in their own living worlds“ (EAGLE, 2008). Clearly, such a definition of empirical gripping does not make it easier at all. We have come to this work definition by analyzing the starting concepts: „It is an informal learning process that is punishable by a reflective change of learning that takes place between people who consider themselves to be members of different generations“ (2016). Based on empirical procedures, we then characterized intergenerational learning on the basis of answers to generally formulated questions: how is learning specific? Is it neutral or positive? Is intergenerational learning naturally happening? How can intergenerational learning be supported? Does this learning bring stability or innovation? First, we analyze work with theoretical constructs used in research. Specifically, we select „generation, “ „learning“ constructs (the process of information and reflection). Subsequently, we analyse the formulation of research issues from the proposed project in confrontation with the implemented project. Finally, we are discussing the link between research issues and the possibilities to obtain and present appropriate answers to them. The source for our analyses are primarily journal texts and final monographs published by the team. The proposed contribution will not go into the detailed findings obtained over the four years of the project’s solution on intergenerational learning, but will try so-called „bird’s-eye perspective, “ that is to say with distance, and perhaps to present the subject of learning between generations in various social environments as an actual and socially serious phenomenon, the description of which and the fullest possible understanding of which cannot be achieved once and easily. The emphasis is therefore on critical reflection of the methodological practices used, which may also be useful to seize other (nearby) educational and andragogical topics.
