Title: THE DEVELOPMENT OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING MOTIVATION AMONG UPPER SECONDARY STUDENTS: THE USE OF SELF-DETERMINATION THEORY
Abstract: The study examines the development of EFL motivation among upper secondary students (N = 3,452), distinguishing between autonomous motivation (intrinsic and identified regulations) and controlled motivation (introjected and external regulations). Starting the school year, students reported higher agreement with self-reported questionnaire items on autonomous motivation, especially those reflecting the value and importance of EFL learning for the student (identified regulation). During the school year, students’ identified, intrinsic, and external regulation slightly lowered. Introjected regulation, reflecting feelings of guilt/ shame related to underachievement in EFL studies and feelings of external pressure, slightly increased. Future research can study links between motivation and students’ characteristics.
